Early Bird Biscuit Company is the CuisinebyKB Spotlight this week!
Early Bird Biscuit Company has been serving up freshly baked biscuits and biscuit sandwiches to Richmond locals since 2014. Originally a Northside staple, they have recently relocated to 119 N. Robinson and business has been booming ever since. While they may have had some growing pains when they first opened at their Robinson Street location, they have become welcomed neighbors these days. Even in the last three weeks, I can say that the line on Saturday morning that forms for the biscuits definitely moves quicker than the first time I visited(I waited almost 40 minutes for my biscuit--albeit totally worth it!)
Their recipe is simple, freshly baked biscuits, one special biscuit a day and one breakfast sandwich a day, 'Biscuits 'n Crazy,' a daily selection of bakery favorites from their pastry case and Blanchard's freshly brewed Coffee.
So far I have been there four times and have not been able to pass up the biscuits for something in the pastry case, but I have heard wonderful things about the daily pastry selection.
One thing to note when eating here is that the only options for the coffee bar is whole milk or almond milk, and if you order a macchiato, it is a traditional style macchiato, not an 'Americanized' version.
Of the three "unique biscuit flavors" that I have tried, I would say that the 'Lemon Poppyseed Biscuit' is far and beyond my favorite one that I have had. The lemon curd and poppyseeds atop the hot, freshly baked biscuit melted delightful into my mouth. So delicious!
The one that I was the least impressed with was the 'Boston Cream Pie' Biscuit. I was expecting a little bit of a bigger flavor. I don't know if because of the rush, the biscuit makers had begun skimping on the cream and sugar, but the way it was described is that it was 'filled with cream and topped with chocolate' and the biscuit I received was topped with a little bit of chocolate and a dollop of 'Boston Cream.' I don't know that I'll be trying that flavor again when it returns.
I also have asked staff there what their favorite item from the pastry case is and not many of them seem to have an opinion, which makes me think that they don't eat what's in the pastry case which is a bit worrisome. Kitchen staff should be able to make a suggestion about something that is their favorite. Just something that has stuck with me every time I have almost ventured from the usual biscuit of the day or biscuit sandwich.
Early Bird Biscuit is a gem and a must see stop in the fan! It reminds me of my favorite brunch place in the town where I went to college and cannot wait to bring out of town friends here. I hope to see their daily flavors continue to grow and become more adventurous.
